Arena North West Division One Gala 3,  8 December 2012

Our swimmers were back in National League action again on Saturday night and were just pipped to the post  by a strengthened Horwich team who were swimming in their home pool.

It was a difficult place to compete with all the swimmers crammed in to one side of the pool but the following  managed 20 PBs between them: Chloe Middleham (3), Alice Harrison (3, 50 Freestyle twice), Hannah Deeley (2), Daniel Cheshire (2), Matthew Lamb (2),Thomas Hill (2), Elizabeth Dowding, Emily Lowrie, Cameron Dunk, Mark Riley, Ryan Clarke and Tom Hughes.

Chloe, Daniel and Matthew all achieved wins as did Men's captain Alex Dunk who won his 3 individual races in typical Mr D fashion. The Open Boys Medley Relay team also won as did the 15 & under Boys Freestyle team.

Final result  1st: Horwich (184 points), 2nd: Prescot (183), 3rd: Leyland Barracudas (178), 4th: Chorley Marlins (177),  5th: City of Chester (167), 6th: Halton (157).

Tom stars at Percy Mason Memorial Gala, 1st - 2nd December 2012

Prescot took 9 swimmers to the annual Percy Mason gala which took place this year at the new Jubilee Park Leisure centre. Unfortunately due to some technical issues with the pool the old timing system from Woolston had to be used which meant the single line timing system was difficult to read (especially when the referee walked in front). I’m sure these issues will be quickly resolved and the pools lovely colour display board could be used next year.
Well enough of the technical difficulties and on to what turned out to be a fantastic weekend for the swimmers and the club. The team was led from the front with Tom Hughes who took 10 1st places a single 2nd and a speeding ticket from his mammoth 12 swims and capped the weekend off by taking the Top Boy trophy by a clear 20 points. Tom produced some great swims and PBs whilst amassing his haul and justly deserved to be weighed down by his gold medals.

Tom was closely followed over the weekend by Charlotte Dodson who produced some exciting swims and took 4 1st places a single third and was caught speeding twice. She gained some well-deserved PBs and showed what results a positive attitude in both training and competition can bring.

Speeding Tickets are awarded to swimmers who swim faster than the upper entrance time to a meet.
Although getting one means that you miss out on a medal they are really viewed as a badge of honour as they are an indication of a very good swim indeed.

Mentions should also go to Hannah Deeley who took 2nd place in the girls competition after getting 3 1sts, 4 2nds and a 3rd and Katherine Cheshire who again underlined her recent improvements and promotion to ‘A’ squad with impressive PBs and 3 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd.

I could probably write a report on every swimmer as they all produced some bright and exciting swims to produce some fantastic individual PBs and medal performances which included Daniel Clark (1 gold), Jessica Hardman (1 Gold, 2 Silver), Amy Johnson (2 Gold, 1 Silver), Daniel Johnson (1 Bronze) and James Savage ( 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze).

The rewards did not end there as Prescot got 2nd place in the Visiting Team awards from 26 competing clubs.

I would like thank all the swimmers for their attitude and behaviour in what was a very crowded swimmer area.

Simon Deeley

All in all the 9 swimmers produced 38 Personal Bests

Lancashire win 11th consecutive title, 21 October 2012

Alex Dunk (Prescot SC, 17) competed for Lancashire in the National County Team Championships in Sheffield on Sunday 21st October. Lancashire fought a close battle with 38 other county teams in a packed Ponds Forge pool. The swimmers were lined up in their county colours down one side of the seating, with their supporters on the opposite side. The atmosphere was made even louder as both Division 1 and Division 2 competitions were running at the same time, either side of the boom.

Division 1 champions, Lancashire were every county’s target in what proved to be a very close battle with Yorkshire, Somerset, Middlesex and Surrey.

With only the Mixed Open 6x50m Freestyle relay to go, just two points separated Yorkshire and Lancashire. Yorkshire suffered an early set back touching in tenth place after the first leg, whilst the Lancashire team of Alex Dunk, William Murray, Brearnna Close, Anna Doughty, Nathan Bennett and Jessica Lloyd stormed ahead of the field to claim the win and thus seal the championship title for the 11th consecutive year

Final Result  1st Lancashire 472, 2nd Yorkshire 450, 3rd Somerset 434, 4th Middlesex 404.

Wirral Metro L2 Open Meet, 5 - 7 October 2012

An intrepid team of Prescot Swimmers descended on the Europa Pools in Birkenhead last weekend. By the time they had finished they had amassed

52 Personal Bests
45 Liverpool & District Qualifying Times
36 Lancashire County Qualifying Times
14 North West Region Qualifying Times
3   National Age Group Qualifying Times (at least they would have been in a 50m pool)

Congratulations to them all - the hard work is obviously paying off.

Kevin tells of 2 notable happenings:

One swimmer, faced with their favourite event was panicking and in tears  - they did not want to compete. One of our coaches had a chat with the swimmer at the request of the swimmer’s mother, and after a while they agreed to swim. As they progressed through the seats in the call-up area, they appeared to be focussing more on the race. They got ready, got on the block when asked and the starter set them off. They came up in the lead, swimming fast, increasing their lead through the 8 lengths, finishing with an 11 second PB. Their swim helped another of our swimmers also achieve a 10 second PB, chasing them down. Outstanding swimming from both and now the swimmer’s mother was in tears. This was an excellent example of an individual who has a fear of failure, but who managed to fight against that fear and produce a result beyond expectations.

The other story concerns Emily Lowrie racing her first 800m distance event. She started well, but her goggles moved and started to come off. They needed attention three separate times during the race, eventually coming off, shortly followed by her hat. Despite this and without goggles or hat, Emily finished her race, producing a new PB and a 4th place. Emily demonstrated true spirit and despite being upset, was soon able to laugh it off. Not many swimmers start their race with three items and finish with only one! Well done Emily.
